How to Gracefully Handle Getting Dumped, or How to Re-invent Yourself

“Even what may seem at first sight to be an intensely negative situation--a difficult relationship, financial woes or poor health--can serve as an opportunity for the creation of positive value. A lifelong commitment to justice, for example, may arise from an early experience of having been wronged.” Ten years ago I had been dating Ryan for a month when he texted me to let me know he just didn't feel that way about me, and wanted to end things. Because he and I had been friends for awhile before, and because he was my first boyfriend, that took me awhile to get over. Even though we are great friends now again, we didn't talk for years after that.  Fast forward ten years later, to this morning. I wake up to a text from the current guy I've been dating. His name? Ryan. His text? Let’s break-up.  The absurdity theme has been relevant in my life for some time, so I am coming to accept the “hilarious yet awful” motif that is constantly being sprinkled across...

Navigating OBAMACare

I’m going to be really honest in this blog, because I am at the precipice of a very raw moment in my life and there are things (surprisingly) that I really do hold inside even though I tend to be very open with my life struggles and opinions, often to the chagrin of others.   But I have finally reached a place in my life where I really don’t care what other people think about what I say, because the people who are trying to silence me are the ones upholding detrimental cultural mores about mental health. Research suggests that the best treatment for poor mental health is a combination of regular active therapy and the right prescriptive medications to combat these truly insidious disorders/ diseases/ variants/CALL THEM WHATEVER YOU WANT, I DON’T FUCKING CARE WHAT YOU CALL ME I JUST WANT SOME GODDAMN HELP WITH MY MOTHER FUCKING HEALTH BILLS!!!! Fuck, you can call me crazy- don’t care. Call me whatever you like; just don’t withhold access to adequate resources and reasonable, p...

A Letter to Myself

aka “The Philip Seymour Hoffman Effect” Dear Jessie, Today is October 29, 2013. Last night was fun, wasn’t it? Was it? Why did you smoke those two cigarettes? I know why you did. Psychic release. I know why you do the things you do before you do them. Nestled snuggly underneath the squiggly electronic jagged lines that send currents through that big lumpy cranium of yours lays core beliefs you have about yourself, the world, and other people. They are hidden so sometimes you don’t even know they are there, but they are. Some mutate and evolve over time and some have remained untouched for decades. There are very few unchangeable facts about people. We tightly grasp ideas like “blonde hair” “extrovert” “intelligent” “depressed” “unlovable” to form our identity. Without them we feel empty. But truthfully, these signifiers are as permanent as Miley Cyrus’ innocence. Though these ideas give us temporary existential relief, they ultimately are incredibly limiting...

This love candle isn't working....

I'm a free bitch baby  When I lit this love candle my fr iend gave me , my intentions were certainly not to bring about a blast from my romantic past. Because fuck my romantic past! I’m not tryin to hear any of that noise anymore. The truth is I have been pretty insecure in all my relationships so none of them led to me being very happy. I am attracted to narcissists. According to psychological studies, “highly sensitive people” (HSP) as we are known tend to be that way: “HSPs can feel such intense love and compassion for people that we can believe our love can heal others. And often other people are so amazed and relieved by receiving this much love and understanding, they respond with enormous amounts of gratitude and often flattery. Sensitive people respond to this praise by feeling good about ourselves and feeling needed and so we give more. But as this pattern continues, we end up giving until we’ve got nothing left and getting nothing in return, under...
